What measurement task is a micrometer primarily used for?

Outside dimensions of small parts

Micrometers are precision tools built to measure outside dimensions of small parts with high accuracy. They have a fixed anvil and a movable spindle that you advance with the thimble, so you can read the dimension to very small increments (often thousandths of an inch or hundredths of a millimeter). This makes them ideal for checking external diameters, thicknesses, or other outer dimensions where rulers or calipers aren’t precise enough. Other tasks use different tools: measuring internal sizes requires inside micrometers or bore gauges; thread pitch needs a thread pitch gauge; surface roughness requires a profilometer; mass is measured with a balance or scale.
